The word of the hour is blogs, blogs, blogs. Many are starting to realize the power that a business blog can bring to your business.

So, why does every business need a blog? First of all, search engines are in love with real blogs. By real blogs I mean blogs that are set-up and run by businesses that offer valuable, fresh content on them. Unfortunately, there are people of individuals who set up fake blogs and fill them with plagiarized, scraped, but keyword rich, content in an effort to trick the search engines into ranking the content highly. With the time and effort these people put into setting up fake, useless blogs, they could actually offer legitimate services. These types of practices can actually get your blog banned by Google. It’s best to resist the urge to use these practices.

Why Do Search Engines Love Legitimate Blogs?

The more posts, the better. Content is king, and here’s why. Each blog entry is shown in chronological order on a blog’s homepage but, in reality, each blog entry is its own web page, with its own unique URL and title. So, an active blogger can easily create hundreds of keyword rich web pages in a matter of months.

Change Is Good

In order to stake your claim in the online world, you must commit to making posts at least four or five times per week. This commitment means that you are creating, updating, and making changes to some portion of your website a few times each week. A typical small business website is lucky to receive an update several times each year. Search engines like change. That’s why they love blogs!

Wake Up Call

Because search engines love fresh content, they are ever ready to visit a site whenever it is updated. One feature unique to blogs is a wonderful thing called pinging. Basically, what you are doing is sending out a message to various blog directories to come and visit you site because it has been updated. Once a search engine has located your site, this is like a personal invitation to come back and get the new stuff. I use a plugin called Ping-O-Matic that sends pings to multiple services automatically.

RSS Directories Blogs also have a built in distribution method known as RSS. This allows you to push your updated content out to people who subscribe through an RSS reader. This ability allows you to communicate directly with subscribers but it can also help get your main site noticed and indexed by the major search engines. Yahoo, for example, allows people (including you) to subscribe to your blog’s RSS feed. On the day you create your blog, you can subscribe to it via a free MyYahoo account and Yahoo will visit and index your blog for free. It has no choice.

Linking is another key to blogging success. Getting links from other high quality blogs will send traffic and get your blog and web site noticed. You can do this by guest blogging on another site and including a link to your blog. You can also get links by posting valuable comments on top blogs that allow follow-backs. This means that the comment will include a link to your blog.

You can also set up an automatic stream that will carry your blog posts over to your FaceBook and LinkedIn accounts. And don’t forget to Twitter about your new blog posts. Twitter is an excellent way to get instant traffic.

So, your blog marketing strategy should look a little like this:

Set-up a blog and start posting.

Stream your posts into your FaceBook and LinkedIn.

Submit your blog to the major blog and RSS directories.

Start looking for link partners. Also, make useful comments on popular blogs that compliment your own business.

Repeat

In the last few weeks I have set-up blogs for a real estate agency in Orlando, a direct drilling company, and a natural health food website. In each case, the blogs were indexed and spidered by the major search engines within 48 hours. Traffic to the main web sites for these businesses has already doubled or tripled. Traffic from each of the major search engines is now showing up for a large number of important search terms and phrases. Who knows how long this blog traffic lightning will last? But at this moment a blog has never made more practical business sense.

If you’re convinced that you need a blog but don’t want to hassle with setting it up and learning how to promote it properly, check out the first post on the main page of this website. I do the work, you’re up and blogging and promoting your blog in a matter of days. CustomBlogForFree.com

Here’s to your blogging success!

Has your business taken a recent turn? Did your world get shaken up a bit when this whole economy thing happened? Mine did.

I’ve always been a freelance writer. But it wasn’t my sole source of income until quite recently. The economy shook up my business, which had been my main source of income for the past 6 years, and I guess you could say the well dried up. Amazingly enough, at the exact same time that one business was dying, my writing had taken off like a bullet. My income grew every week and I was finally doing what was my actual passion. A few years back I read the book, “Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow” and I thought the author was full of crap. Guess what… not full of crap.

I started blogging while also completing my paid ghostwriting projects and before too long I started to make some serious money from one of my blogs. It was really starting to pull together for me. I was living out the “do what you love and the money will follow” thing. As I sit back now and look at where I am with my blogging business, I can’t believe how far I’ve come. It’s still sort of surreal to me. Examining the steps it took me to arrive here (and I still have a long way to go, by the way) I can easily recognize the foundation this business is built on, and what that means to the success or failure of any entrepreneurial endeavor.

Whether you are starting a new business or running an established one, there are three basics to building a failure-proof business. These three building blocks all lie in your foundation, and can make difference between running a business that just pays the bills or one that truly thrives. So what are they?

Research

While research may seem like a tedious and boring task that involves reports, graphs, and hours of investigation– this should be the foundation for any major decision you make regarding your business. It is imperative that you face every challenge with as little surprises as possible. Work to be the one “in the know” for your particular industry.

Aside from surrounding yourself with like-minded and successful people to bounce your ideas off of, you can conduct your own market research to gauge the interest level of your idea:

Use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to throw new ideas out there and document the feedback gauge their interest in your product or service.

Use tools such as Tweetlater’s keyword tracker to receive free reports on how many times certain keyword phrases are used on Twitter. This information is invaluable… AND FREE!

The time you put into your research will not go unrewarded. The results will help you to uncover facts that may impact everything from how you structure your business, how your product is delivered, your pricing – or whether your idea is feasible at all.

Action

After the research is complete, it’s time to begin. Exciting fact: If you’ve bothered to do the research in the first place – an act which requires some planning and organization – you’ve already proven to possess the tenacity it takes to take the next step and turn your business idea into reality. (tenacity- To stick firmly to any decision, plan or opinion without changing or doubting it)

The wheels generally fall off the bus during the research stage. I meet so many would-be entrepreneurs who continually talk about their Great Business Idea but never do anything about it. That’s often because the research stage is not the sexy part. They want to go straight from Great Business Idea to an entrepreneur living The Four-Hour Work Week. It doesn’t work that way – and I don’t care what anyone says, you have to put in the hard yards if you want to experience the pay-off.

In order to motivate yourself into action, it’s useful to break down what you need to do into bite-sized chunks. The obstacles appears when we have an item on our “to do” list that looks like: “Complete blog”. That’s way too vague for a to-do list. Instead, sit down with a cup of coffee for an hour and “chunk” it. Chunking is a term we coined during a previous blog post. It’s the act of breaking down a goal into bite-sized, do-able “chunks.” In chunks, your blog post would look like this:

Upload WordPress to Panel

Purchase Thesis theme, upload and unpack. Set all Thesis variables.

Install plugins (name them here)

Look for ideas for a header design. Find out header size.

Create header and upload.

Now this has turned into a workable project. Big difference than the entire project intimidatingly staring you down. Rule of thumb: A chunk should be a task that doesn’t take more than an hour to complete. If it does, re-chunk it–or break it down into even smaller pieces til you hit the one hour mark.

Commitment and Belief

Okay so I snuck up on you with this one. You are going to have to exercise some serious faith in order to enjoy business success. Sometimes the intangibles are the most difficult, but this shouldn’t be so. Make the inner decision to reach success in your endeavers and YOU WILL. Nothing is impossible to you, if you believe. You have the power to accomplish what you have set out to do. Your commitment to the goal will be tested and you will reach crossroads along the way. The key is to keep the blinders on, create a positive environment for yourself and simply keep going. Most of the time the people who get there are simply the ones that didn’t quit. Don’t quit. Don’t sell yourself short. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will get there. In order to create the type of environment you need to achieve success you will need to do the following:

Limit your time with naysayers. If someone doesn’t encourage you or believe in your goal, drop them and keep going. I’m not talking about people that offer constructive criticism or offer a different perspective. I’m talking about the down-and-dirty, “You are NOT going to make this happen” naysayer. Turn a deaf ear to these people.

Surround yourself with enthusiastic, encouraging and successful people. Don’t isolate yourself from those who you can help, mentor and serve, but be sure to get your battery charged by creating a successful environment for yourself.

Read inspirational books and materials. Glean insights from others who have paved the way.

Maintain a healthy balance. Don’t lose sight of what is truly important. God, family, country is the signature of the United States Marine Corps. Yours should be God, family, business success. Don’t slack when it comes to your business, but never put your business before your family or your faith.

Entrepreneurship is a journey. It’s filled with challenges and even obstacles, but is very rewarding as well. Whether you simply want to open a coffee shop, introduce a life changing health product to the world, or change the views of entire corporations through your consulting–you can do it.

Just remember: If you believe you can change the world, and you act on that conviction – chances are, you probably will.

Somewhere in the email the word “time” is inevitably mentioned. Most of my emails come from work from home moms, who I can tell just by the quality of writing in their e-mail, could do fabulously well with a professional blog. If only they would get started.

Another recent e-mail came from an architect interested in starting an industry-specific blog. What a great idea. This man has worked in the field for decades, and obviously has a lot of quality inside information, insights and interesting stories. Will his plan for a blog come to fruition? That remains to be seen.

Believe it or not, blogging takes a lot of dedication. The easiest way to get from where you are right now to where you want to be is to divide your business plan into small easy chunks. I guess we could make up a new term here and call our little daily goals; “chunking.” Not knowing where you are personally, I can’t really tell you what your next chunk will be, but I’m sure you can figure it out. If you don’t have a web hosting plan yet, that’s your next chunk. Maybe you’re stumped by the technical aspects. Do you know how to install the correct version of WordPress into your hosting files? Do you know how to upload your theme? These don’t have to be roadblocks that stand in the way of your online success.

One of my reasons for created this blog was to take the technical aspect off your plate. I set up your entire blog and when I’m through you are ready for action. After your blog is set up, your next chunk is to make a workable blogging schedule. Two things are involved here; writing and publishing blog posts and marketing your blog every day. It really shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to write your post and maybe another half an hour to quickly add something to your Facebook, Twitter your article, or make some relevant comments on other blogs in order to gain some links back to your site.

Regular and purposeful blogging yields increased traffic as individuals begin to realize that your website is a current source of information. If there’s a significant period of downtime, people will begin to unsubscribe from your feed. Developing a blogging schedule will vary based on your needs, your current schedule, and your ability to prioritize. If you’re looking to become a professional blogger or turn your blog into your main source of income, then you’ll probably need to work on it.

For me it works out best to write my blog posts first thing in the morning before my day begins to slip away. As a freelance writer with pressing deadlines, it would be quite easy to simply wake up each morning and put my nose to the grindstone (or my current writing projects). If I allow this to happen and don’t make my blogs a top priority I will eventually get lost in my work and my business blogs will fade away. As long as I keep up with my blogs I happily enjoy several sources of income. My goal is to keep every source working for me and increase my blogging income little by little.

Here are a few solid tips that will help you prioritize your blogging:

Strike while the iron’s hot. If you’re on a roll, the words are flowing, and your mind is racing with ideas, take advantage of that moment. Write two or three blog posts. Publish one now and post date the other two. You can easily get a week’s worth of posts finished in one sitting.

Looking for topic ideas? One of the best ways to find something to write about is by lurking on the forums in your industry to find out what questions people are asking. By taking those questions and turning them into blog posts you can be assured that you are writing something of value.

Keep a pad of paper with you at all times. Ideas come from the craziest places. I once woke up in the middle of the night after having a dream, raced to my computer and created one of my most popular posts.

Get in the zone. When you’re blogging–blog. Don’t write a few lines, check your e-mails, write a few more lines, instant message a friend. That just doesn’t work. This is serious business, so treat it accordingly.

Pretty simple tips, huh? Blogging is a simple thing when it comes right down to it. That’s why people seem to be amazed when you tell them that’s what you do for a living. It’s kind of like making t-shirts–people will look at a successful t-shirt and inevitably they will think to themselves, “I could have done that. It’s not so special.” Could they have done it? Maybe… but did they? No they didn’t, and there lies the difference between those that are in the game, and those that are not.

Make your decision today. Are you in the game? If you are, then decide what your next chunk is and let’s get busy, before tomorrow turns into the next tomorrow and the next tomorrow and the next tomorrow. You get the idea.

If you’re ready to create your business blog today, visit the post on my home page and I will do all I can to get you started. Let’s do this thing!

Yes, social marketing tools such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube should have a strong place in your marketing arsenal–but without a blog, you really don’t have a highly functional and dedicated piece of web real estate to lead your potential clients to.

A blog is, by far, the most effective personal branding tool for the small business owner. Once set up, it’s easy to maintain and is the landing point that your friends and business acquaintances should be led to. Your blog should be the ‘destination’ point.

Top 8 reasons why your business needs a blog right now:

1. Personal Branding
Blogging affords an opportunity to present yourself in a very real and personal way to your potential and current clients. Use your blog to teach, offer tips, and give information on products and services. Blogs posts should be informative, engaging and always concerned with ‘giving’ to your reader.

2. Exposure Through Rankings
A well written and SEO blog, with proper meta-tags and keywords will push you up to the top of Google rankings faster than anything else can! I’ve been indexed on page one of Google in as little as 5 days.

3. Supplement Your Other Websites and Projects
Use your blog or blogs to leverage yourself in the industry by linking to and promoting your other projects and websites.

4. Learn Your Customer
Read and answer your comments, learn your customer and gain insights into their wants, needs and expectations of your industry, service or product.

5. Test New Ideas
So you woke up in the middle of the night with a killer new idea as an offshoot of your business? Cool! Test it out on your blog. It is an excellent platform to test those new ideas risk free!

6. Stand Out from the Crowd
Use your humor, sarcasm and unique ideas to make your blog and your business identity stand out from the crowd. Your blog represents YOU! Do you know why reality shows are so successful? Because people LOVE to see the ‘real’ side, the personal side of you. Injecting personality into your blog may just be the thing to win over potential clients.

7. Gain a Following
Readers who find your blog interesting and engaging will subscribe. This is exactly where you want to be! Subscriptions will provide you with an ongoing relationship with your readers. That’s even better than a hot email list! Readers are coming to you on purpose! As you gain a following it is vital that you keep supplying your readers with fresh content. If you become busy with other projects, or have an upcoming trip or vacation, hire a ‘ghost blogger’ to keep that content coming while you are away. Companies such as Writers-Elite have a team of writers who blog professionally on a variety of topics: beauty, real estate, tech, marketing, wealth management, green living, medical, careers and more. This is an affordable way to provide a constant flow of content.

8. Opportunities
As you develop your blogs, unexpected doors of opportunity will open to you. Partnerships, speaking engagements, guest radio spots, even news coverage. That’s what ‘going viral’ is all about.

These are the top 8 reasons to build a blog right now! If you contact Partnership Marketing at partnershipmktg@aol.com your blog can be built in as little as 24 hours….for FREE!

Although your home page may not be the initial entrance point for visitors to your website, it absolutely must be the page that tells the story of what your site is all about. If your home page leaves visitors confused or frustrated, they probably won’t return.

Revisit your home page often and try to look at it with fresh vision each time you read it. Your home page is what will make or break your website. Your home page is your money maker. Use the following questions to create a home page that rocks.

Where am I?
Does your reader know instantly and clearly whether they are in Kansas anymore? Your visitors should know who you are and what your company does….immediately. Logo and tagline should clarify whether you offer a service, products, advice, etc.

What’s The Point?
If you spend a good deal of time online, you’ve seen the websites that make it pretty hard to pinpoint exactly what they do or who the heck they are. I guess the visitors are supposed to just ‘know.’

Can I see some I.D?
Are you professional and reliable or artsy and cutting-edge? Whatever you are projecting, use content, graphics and design to pull together one look or persona for you…and then stay consistent.

What Year am I in?
Does your website scream 1994? Here are some tell-tale signs….Cartoonish Clipart, Comic Sans font, the total “I did this myself” look. Site visitors are real people and if your site looks tacky and amateurish, you won’t be trusted.

We’re All Special
Not really… but if you are, clarify what makes you different, and the unique value you offer the site visitor. Give them a reason to at least bookmark your site.

Are you Just a Tease?
Like the cover of a racy magazine, your home page should entice new site visitors to want to check out additional pages. Just remember to deliver what your home page promises. If it looks amazing but offers nothing, you may as well have the website that screams 1994.

Content Overload – Just Gimme the Facts Jack
Most website visitors do not read through an entire page, but instead scan pertinent information. Provide them with plenty of visual cues: Clickable images, Videos, links, etc. Give text in bite-size, readible pieces or bullet points. And remember to leave sufficient white space on the page – clutter can be a major obstacle to website readability. No black backgrounds please.

Name, Rank and Serial Number
Does every element on your home page receive the same size and treatment? If so, you may be paralyzing your site visitors. Gently nudge the reader along from point to point by allowing different weights to the different elements on your home page.

Will You Still Love Me In the Morning?
Many site visitors have no clue who you are, and they always have options to go somewhere else. Therefore, it’s critical to convey a sense of trust. This can include a Better Business Bureau membership with prominently displayed logos, association and charity affiliation logos, client testimonials, a link to your privacy policy, etc. Let your client know that you won’t disappear after the sale is made.

Is there an Easy-to-Respond-to Call to Action?
Does your home page clarify what the site visitor is supposed to do next? Should they sign up for a tutorial, make a purchase or reservation or download a freebie? Let your visitor know what you want them to do and why they should do it.

Become a Mind Reader
Your site visitors are real people with valid issues and questions. If you can deliver a deeply satisfying experience through your site by targeting their biggest hurdle or by answering the questions they are afraid to ask, you’ve got it made.

Follow these tips for a killer home page that leaves your customer with that satisfied glow…

For more information on web success, see Web-Success101.com. If you are ready to create your blog, follow the steps in our home page’s main article for your very own satisfied glow. Your blog will be up and running within 24 hours.

Have Blogs Brought an End to Conventional Websites?

According to Problogger, one of the most highly respected (and best paid) bloggers of our time, the answer is, Yes.

“…Blogs are cheap, easy, efficient, wildly easy to find on the Internet, marketing-friendly, and just plain fun. They run circles around websites.”

Have conventional websites become obsolete? Here are some of the answers:

Websites are clunky and expensive; blogs are lean and cheap.

You have to wait for someone to make changes to your website. Once your blog is set up, you can easily make changes yourself.

You can learn more about your visitors from a blog.

You can update your blog from anywhere, even your phone, while you are on the run.

You can collect email addresses, and download free reports and bonuses off of a website. Same with a blog.

You can use a shopping cart to collect money for e-commerce with a website. Same with a blog.

You can set up a promo page with all sorts of cool links and forms on a website. Same with a blog.

It takes three to six months for the big search engines to find you with a website. It takes two or three days with a blog.

You can easily track stats of who has visited your regular website. Same with a blog.

The media are more likely to find you on a blog.

This list could go on and on, but you get the gist. Blogs are the answer to your marketing needs. So if you’re thinking about a website, stop in your tracks and run towards a blog instead!

You have thought about creating a blog, you may have even spent countless hours trying to figure out “how to create a blog”

Now it’s time to take action.

Whether you are planning to use your blog as an extension of your business, a complete website, or for Internet marketing…you will finally be able to dig your heels in and get started with our free blog set up.

Follow the steps outlined below and within 24 hours (usually less) you will be ready to make money blogging. You will have your own domain name and a fully functional, SEO optimized blog (a mini website) ready to go.

Step 1: You’ll Need A Place to Host Your New Blog & Your Own Dot Com Name

You will need your own domain name and hosting. It’s your little piece of web real estate.

There are quite a few options for hosting, but we suggest: Hostmonster.com

Hostmonster is one of the fastest growing web hosting companies in the United States. They are a big company with a small company feel. Their hosting packages have tons of free features that cost extra at other hosting sites. I have over 30 domains and sites hosted with them, and have never waited more than 2 minutes to speak with someone for service. They offer live help via phone, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The best thing about Hostmonster is your ability to pay one price and host as many sites as you’d like. If you are planning an online business, this is important. You’ll be able to host numerous blogs and dot com sites without paying one extra dime.

I have over 10 blogs with hostmonster, all completely separate from each other and I pay one yearly fee, that’s all… It’s awesome!

Step 2: Email Your Confirmation to Me & We Will Get Started!

Email me the confirmation you received from Hostmonster.com to editor@customblogforfree.com. If you receive several emails, please only send the one that includes your domain name, log-in name and password. Of course you can change all this later – but I need it to actually build and install your blog.

Step 3: I Build Your Blog and Install TEN Plugins While You Relax!

Also send me the exact email address you would like me to set up on your new Wordpress Blog. For example: YourName@YourNewBlog.com. In that same email, I need to know what Theme you have purchased through my website. I can install any theme that you have purchased off of my site. If there is a theme that you want and I don’t have it available, please email me and I will get it for you.

Thesis is by far the most versatile and easiest theme to customize to suit your needs. I would recommend Thesis to anyone who is starting a personal or business blog because it is already SEO optimized and ready to be indexed on Google.

If you’d rather use a different theme, links are provided on the right hand column to several different professional theme sites.
